Environmental protection

Our Barther shipyard is always open to new solutions and is ready, with the consent of the client/shipowner, to support test trials with new, non-toxic methods of fouling prevention.

In 2004, in coordination with the German Navy, test areas were coated on a 15 m tug to test an antifouling system developed in Rostock. The special thing about it is that the outer coating is conductive and by applying electricity, the pH value can be adjusted alternately alkaline and acidic in a boundary layer only tenths of a mm thick to the water body, which, as has been tested in laboratory tests and also field tests, can prevent the build-up of fouling organisms. With the partial coating of the tugboat, a process of this kind was tested on a large scale for the first time in Germany with financial support from the German Federal Environmental Foundation. The result of this led to the patents  EP000002980167B1  & EP000002980167A1, in which the Barth shipyard is a joint partner, along with the Frauenhofer Society and Bioplan GmbH.

In order to continue to effectively pursue our moral obligation for sustainable environmental protection, our Schiffswerft Barth GmbH is available as a partner with the Frauenhofer Society for future research projects.
